Constipation Tips
(please see disclaimer at the bottom of this page)
Tip #1
What we gave our daughter when she had a bad case of constipation was plain yogurt with active yogurt culture. If your daughter likes plain yogurt with vanilla flavor then it sure is worth a try. It cleared up our daughter's constipation within 2 days. It's also really great for thrush. Because of our daughter's macroglossia she gets thrush a lot more than other babies.

Tip #2
We've found something that helps with the constipation and even tastes good according to our son .... lactolose or enulose.  He says it tastes like pancake syrup .... yuck!

Tip #3
My 3 year old, non-BWS son, suffers from severe constipation. He has been like this from birth even while I was nursing him. He has to take Milk of Magnesia daily (its the only thing that has worked) and this is a huge struggle. With all of the recent postings I thought that I would try to find something that would be more appealing to him. The manager at our drugstore recommended the Phillips mint chewable tablets. He said that other parents bought them and dipped them in melted chocolate to make them appear like a treat. It's easy, I melt chocolate chips in the microwave, cover the tablets and put them in the fridge on wax paper. So far it has been working great. He thinks that they are candy. I have tried them and with the chocolate they taste like after dinner mints.

Tip #4
My daughter gives my grandson a teaspoon of milk of magnesia a day, as directed by her pediatrician. In the beginning her doctor suggested a teaspoon everyday until he started having bowel movements daily, then to cut him back to a half teaspoon as long as he would go daily and then to a fourth, in other words slowly wean him off of it.  When she tried to reduce the dosage to half he could not have a bowel movement, so her pediatrician is keeping him on a teaspoon a day for the time being.

Tip #5
Our son has severe constipation. He is only 7 mos old so I find that Karo syrup is helpful in some water or just sugar water.

Tip #6
Our daughter takes colace once a day.  (it is an over the counter drug that our ped recommended)  We also give her Milk of Magnesia once in a while which is supposed to be very safe.

Tip #7
My son is 7 years old and is almost always constipated but if I give him one Kiwi a day it really helps!

Tip #8
Our son was constipated starting at about 6 weeks old, we're talking 8 to 10 days and uncomfortable. At the pediatrician's suggestion we gave him 2 ounces of apple juice a day and then he started having regular daily or every other day movements. Initially I tried to cut back on the apple juice, but the constipation came back.

Tip #9
Our second son had to have special formula for constipation - Nutramigen. It is supposed to be the most easily digestible formula on the market. It's quite pricey, but he loves it and he's thriving!

Tip #10
My daughter Rachel had constipation at the age of six months that was rather severe. Her pediatricians tried all this stuff but nothing worked. Finally we took her to a pediatric gastroenterologist that told us her rectum was distended and had lost a lot of tone from being so constipated. She first had us clean her out with two enemas a day for two days and then started her on a regimen of Citracel and Krondremul ( a water soluble laxative that is thick white in appearance). She stayed on this regimen for six months, gradually reducing the dosages as her bowel function returned to normal. It really did the trick. If you have any doubts about your son I highly recommend he see a pediatric gastroenterologist. Hope this helps.

Tip #11
My son, who suffers from constipation, is on a new medication called  MiriLax. It is available only by prescription and is manufactured by  Braintree laboratories. It is a powder that can be added to water or any  non-sugar liquid. It adds no taste and dissolves very quickly. 1 dose a day  has worked great for Liam and I have absolutely no problem getting him to  drink the liquid that I put it in. I think it is even more effective and  gentler than Milk of Magnesia. I mix it with water or a Crystal light drink mix.

Tip #12
Our daughter had severe constipation. The only thing that worked for her was a teaspoonful of mineral oil per day. I thought the gastroenterologist was making fun of me when he suggested this. But from the very first day that our daughter got this, she never had a painful BM again...and before that she'd scream in pain and terror every time she had one! What a huge difference!
