A mothers story of her Beckwith child
I was twenty years old when I became pregnant with my first child.
Everything was going alright, but queries when I had my first scan big baby.
I gave birth 6 weeks early, it was a very hard and complicated labour. When
Lee was born and they showed him to me, he looked horrible with a large protruding
tongue. I said what is wrong with him, nobody knew. They took Lee away to
special care, I still did not know what the problem was. The nurses took me
on the ward where I slept all night. When I woke up everyone had they babies
beside them. Where is my baby I asked. He is in special care and is very
ill. I was getting very confused. Later on in the day the nurse took me to
special care to see my baby Lee. He was in a incubator with two holes in
the front. The nurse said if I wanted to touch him I could put my hands through
the holes, this hurt me very much. Lee had to be tube fed as his tongue
was too big to suck the bottle. Lee also had low blood sugar hypoglycemia,
breathing problems, hernia, undescended testicles, storkmark on his forehead.
It took two days until the doctor could tell me and Lees dad what the problem
was. We were devastated and did not really understand what Beckwith was. We
were in a state with ourselves. The hospital learned us to tube feed and do
blood sugar tests, then we could take Lee home. It was very hard to cope with,
and I did not want anyone to see my baby, as he looked abnormal. When Lee
was 5 month old he had surgery, on his tongue. I was overwhelmed about this,
then I could learn to love my baby. After the operation Lees tongue was very
swollen, but the day after the stitches came loose and dropped out. I was
in great distress. The doctors told me that elasticated stitches should
have been used, to work with the swelling. The surgeon said there was nothing
he could do, but to wait until it healed. Lee had two flaps hanging out of
his mouth, it took nearly a year for it to heal. Lee looked totally different
I could not believe it, he looked normal then, I loved him so much. Lee then
slavered more than usual all the time, he had his slavery glands diverted
to the back of his mouth, and this problem was solved, things got miles better
the older Lee got. Lee is now 12 years old, 5ft 10 shoe size 12 . Doing good
at school , suffers with asthma. He is hard to talk to. 7 years later to
the same dad we had a healthy girl Zoe who is nearly 5. |
