Michael

During my pregnancy at 41 I had a tremendous amount of amniotic fluid.  My weight went from 117 lbs. to over 220 lbs. at the time of delivery of my son. I had an amniocentesis in my 4th month of pregnancy.  Throughout the pregnancy I was monitored twice weekly with ultrasounds and stress tests.
Not once was Beckwith-Wiedemann mentioned.  When my son was born 5/12/97 he was 11 lbs. 15 oz. The resident pediatrician suggested this syndrome and an ultrasound and UA was performed on my son. This doctor suggested further monitoring.  Unfortunately, the pediatricians who I had chosen to be my sons permanent doctors told me that this was highly unlikely and suggested that the doctor was an alarmist.  They said my son was just a big, healthy baby (one of my brothers was 10 lbs. at birth).  I was then persuaded (and wanted to believe) that they were right.  I listened to them and family members and did not pursue further testing even though in my heart I had a very uneasy feeling.  During the first year of his birth all seemed well.  I asked occasionally about BWS but was told not to worry. July 4th weekend 1999 Michael started having high fevers the doctors said he had a virus.  I had also told them even before hand that his abdomen was getting larger but his appetite was not as good as it had been.  I was told that all kids have dietary changes and don't worry he's just a big, healthy kid.  I kept returning to the doctor-I knew that there was something wrong with my son-no one else believed me I was told I was a "worry-wart".  Finally 2 weeks before Halloween 1999 I insisted that the doctor get to the bottom of what was wrong with my son.  At that time he was examined yet again but this time his abdomen was palpated only to find a mass in the area of his liver.  That weekend we rushed him to Schneider Children's Hospital (New Hyde Park, NY) where after a CT of his abdomen he was diagnosed with hepatoblastoma (85% of his liver was cancer).  My worst fears were realized.  My poor baby then had to endure 5 cycles of chemotherapy.  March 23, 2000 Dr. Michael LaGuaglia at ..... Hospital NY resected 80% of his liver.  Michael was in the hospital for over 30 days due to several complications. (mediport infection, staph/bacterial infections and because his mediprt was removed and afemoral line was put into his left thigh he developed a blood clot in his leg).  After surgical recovery another chemo cycle was performed as a precaution.  All the cancer was removed,  biopsies came back clear.  He now must have ultrasounds and AFP level monthly, every other month another CT of abdomen.  His oncologist and surgeon are the best and I finally have peace of mind.  Michael is doing just great-he is the light of my life.  His oncologist Dr. Ashok Shende wants to do genetic testing to confirm BWS and is monitoring Michael accordingly.  I just wish I had followed my instincts, listened to the original doctors suggestion and not bowed to others pressure and my little babe would not have had to endure the horrors that he went through.  I am glad that I finally have been able to find this support group.
